Basement Media Room for the Kids

Basement Transformation in Toronto’s Wychwood / Cedarvale Area.

We worked closely with the home owner, Lori, and her designer, Sunny Gervan, to create a retreat area for the whole family in this Wychwood / Cedarvale area residence. The basement was primary used for storage and hockey equipment prior to this renovation and they really needed the extra space as the kids are getting older.

At the beginning we aimed to have a large 120″ projection screen come down from the ceiling parallel to the window at the front (opposite the stairs) but the space,

What questions should designers and contractors ask their clients?

Are you a designer or contractor that does remodelling or new construction projects?

Whether you are doing a single room project (kitchen reno), a full renovation or new build, what questions should designers and contractors ask their clients to better understand their technology needs?

De-cluttering your electronics

The actual Marilyn Denis Show segment was removed from the CTV website but I found some old footage and photos showing some of the highlights of our solution. The show segment was titled “De-cluttering your electronics” and was aimed at condo owners who need to save space. A custom cabinet was built and customized to hide a home office area as well as the TV in a sliding panel above a fireplace. We were able to hide all of our components and even use hidden speakers behind the TV panel creating an invisible home theatre.

SONOS Play 1: New all-in-one speaker

SONOS has launched their next innovative speaker. The tiny but mighty little SONOS Play 1. I’m not going to tell you all the specs of the actual speaker. What our customers care about is how does it integrate into their homes? Here’s my take on the value and use of the Play 1…

  1. It is now the least expensive all-in-one speaker in their lineup. At only $219 CAD this is now an easy add on in small rooms.

Why paying LESS for cabling will leave you with a MESS.

Does it make sense to pay an AV specialist to rough-in your home when the walls are open for network, TV and audio? It depends who you ask and what you expect. Here are some of the responses I come across from potential clients…

1. My electrician can do it…

Depending on the quality of your builder you will get different attitudes towards using electricians for more than electrical work. The best builders in the business always use specialty trades. They use the best hardwood floor installers,

CCTV Video Cameras do work

Do you wonder if investing $3k to $8k on video cameras for your home is worth it? It depends on if you or someone you know has had a break-in. One of our clients asked us to install cameras after their renovation because of an increase in theft in the neighbourhood. Six months after, they caught a thief breaking into their car in their driveway and 2 days later the police caught him doing it again with the help of the video footage.

Check out this video from that evening.
