As integrators and smart home systems installers we are responsible for educating and advising our clients. Some of our competitors can do things for less and it is sometimes difficult for clients to understand why. It really does come down to attention to detail and why every contractor out there is going to do things differently. It doesn’t matter if you are hiring a tiling, HVAC or AV company…each trade does things a certain way based on experience, craftsmanship or requirements. As a customer, you need to ask the right questions so there are no surprises and expectations are clear.
CONTROL4 HOMEOWNER PERSONALIZATION
Watch the video to find out how home automation can be implemented to fit your lifestyle. The “When >> Then” methods are similar to IFTTT … “if this then that”.
Here are some automation suggestions based on the type of equipment that might be
installed in your home, with each proposed system getting more elaborate.

A small project doesn’t mean there is no planning or you should just wing it. When our client Doug came to me, we discussed that he just wanted help installing a TV above the fireplace but his challenge was in figuring out how to plan for the equipment being installed inside a small built-in a few feet away. Obviously he didn’t want to see any wiring from the TV and also wanted to be future proof.
Looking through his floor plan
We determined the size and space he would need for his equipment.
We get asked by clients and designers “how much should I spend on in-ceiling speakers” all the time. It is a difficult question to answer early on in a new relationship because we are just getting to know you and your family. What’s important is that we help you spend your money wisely. You don’t want to waste money but you also don’t want to be disappointed with the end result and wished you had upgraded.
What we are talking about here is integrating music into your home renovation or new construction.
Since we specialize in SONOS for many of the systems we have a few tips to share when it comes to “hearing” what is possible from your system.
Surround sound from SONOS is made possible with a few different options including our amazing Fx rear in-ceiling speakers from Monitor Audio paired with the SONOS Connect:AMP or the all new SONOS Amp coming out shortly. Basement Transformation in Toronto’s Wychwood / Cedarvale Area.
We worked closely with the home owner, Lori, and her designer, Sunny Gervan, to create a retreat area for the whole family in this Wychwood / Cedarvale area residence. The basement was primary used for storage and hockey equipment prior to this renovation and they really needed the extra space as the kids are getting older.
At the beginning we aimed to have a large 120″ projection screen come down from the ceiling parallel to the window at the front (opposite the stairs) but the space,
Are you a designer or contractor that does remodelling or new construction projects?
Whether you are doing a single room project (kitchen reno), a full renovation or new build, what questions should designers and contractors ask their clients to better understand their technology needs?
Much like understanding how your clients like to cook, you need to understand how they want to live when it comes to technology. You don’t need to have the technical answers but consider the following situations…
You are renovating for a couple who is elderly.… Read more What questions should designers and contractors ask their clients?
De-cluttering your electronics
The actual Marilyn Denis Show segment was removed from the CTV website but I found some old footage and photos showing some of the highlights of our solution. The show segment was titled “De-cluttering your electronics” and was aimed at condo owners who need to save space. A custom cabinet was built and customized to hide a home office area as well as the TV in a sliding panel above a fireplace. We were able to hide all of our components and even use hidden speakers behind the TV panel creating an invisible home theatre.
Watch us install 222″ of TV as we time-lapse the installation of an LG 84″ with 3 x 46″ Samsung F8000 TVs in a wall of custom cabinets.

SONOS has launched their next innovative speaker. The tiny but mighty little SONOS Play 1. I’m not going to tell you all the specs of the actual speaker. What our customers care about is how does it integrate into their homes? Here’s my take on the value and use of the Play 1…
- It is now the least expensive all-in-one speaker in their lineup. At only $219 CAD this is now an easy add on in small rooms.
- Unfortunately it still requires power so there is no really cutting the cord.
